Money cannot buy happiness.

The statement "Money cannot buy happiness" really shows through in the story The Great Gatsby. Gatsby spent a lot of his time throwing parties and spending money trying to impress Daisy so that he could be with her. His whole idea behind the parties was that one day he was hoping Daisy would come to one. As you can tell this never worked out for him even in the end because she didn't choose to be with him. After his death, she chose to stay with her husband Tom. So in truth, he wasn't happy because he didn't get to be with Daisy, and look at all the money he wasted. So it just proves that money can't really buy happiness.

American Lit: Chapters 3-5

What is the secret connection between Gatsby and Daisy? What does Gatsby hope for? Why does he throw his elaborate parties?Respond in one well written paragraph. Why did Gatsby buy his house? Why does he think he needs such a mansion?Respond in one well written paragraph.

The connection between Gatsby and Daisy is that he fell in love with her. He was hoping that if he threw a lot of parties that she would show up, because he couldn't let go of not having her. He throws elaborate parties because he wants to seem popular and he also wants Daisy to show up. Lots of people come to his parties to party like stars. At these parties peoplecame to his house for the parties, and to use his pool, boats, car, and much more.

I think he bought the house to make another popular statement. He needs a house like this to make a statement and to still seem on top. But he also bought it thinking that he could win Daisy back. He doesn't want to lose popularity. He tries to impress everyone including Daisy by getting this big house.

American Lit Great Gatsby Ch 2

What image watches over the "Valley of Ashes?" What do you think this symbol represents?

The valley of ashes was a description of land that intersected with the city. It feels very grey and lonely. I think this is supposed to represent how Doctor Eckleburgs eyes, but I also think it could be meaning how Nick and Myrtle first met too.

American Lit Great Gatsby Ch 1

Write a paragraph identifying each character introduced in these chapters. Add any identifying phrases about each one.. Also add any information which links one character to another.

Gatsby was the first one introduced into this book. They made it sound like he was a really rich man and that all the poorer people looked up to him.

Tom Buchanon was introduced because he is a richer man, and Mr. Carraway was driving over to have dinner at their families' house. He had known Tom in college.

Demaine was the oil man.

Daisy and Miss Baker were people from the Buchanon family.

Political Correctness in America

Due to the climate of political correctness now pervading America, Kentuckians, Tennesseans, and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as “Hillbillies”. You must now refer to them as Appalachian-Americans.

And furthermore:

HOW TO SPEAK TO A WOMAN AND BE POLITICALLY CORRECT:
1. She is not a “babe” or a “chick” – she is a “breasted american”.
2. She is not “easy” – she is “horizontally accessible”.
3. She is not a “dumb blonde” – she is a “light-haired detour off the information superhighway”.
4. She has not “been around” – she is a “previously enjoyed companion”.
5. She does not “nag” – she becomes “verbally repetitive”.
6. She is not a “two-bit hooker” – she is a “low cost provider”.

HOW TO SPEAK TO A MAN AND BE POLITICALLY CORRECT:
1. He does not have a “beer gut” – he has developed a “liquid grain storage facility”.
2. He is not a “bad dancer” – he is “overly caucasian”.
3. He does not “get lost all the time” – he “investigates alternative destinations”.
4. He is not “balding” – he is in “follicle recession”.
5. He does not act like a “total ass” – he develops a case of “rectal-cranial inversion”.
6. It’s not his “crack” you see hanging out of his pants – it’s “rear cleavage”.

Still Researching

So I've found some really good information on my topic, but I'm still looking. You should check out Sherman Alexie's website.
